Registration certificate in Austria

The registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) is a document, issued to EU/ EWR or Swiss citizens based on their EU-right of residence in Austria for more than three months. The Anmeldebescheinigung is valid for five years. Afterwards, the individuals who have had a legal and uninterrupted residence in Austria can apply for “Bescheinigung des Daueraufenhalts”, which is a certificate of permanent residence.

  1. Application requirements (only one of the requirements should be met)

  • The applicant must be an employee or self-employed in Austria to apply for a registration certificate.
  • The applicant possesses sufficient financial resources for themselves and their family members. During their residence, applicants must not make use of any kind of social welfare benefits and compensatory allowances.
  • The main reason for the residence is completing an education including professional training at public schools or at legally recognized private schools or pursuing a degree at a study institution AND the applicant possesses sufficient financial resources and a health insurance cover for themselves and their family members so that they do not make use of any kind of social welfare benefits and compensatory allowances.

  1. Application Deadlines

The applicants should request an Anmeldebescheinigung within four months of the first arrival in the country at the relevant settlement authority. Upon request, if all application requirements are met, the Anmeldebescheinigung will be issued.

Note! If the application for Anmeldebescheinigung is sent to the relevant authorities after the deadline period, a penalty starting at 50 € must be paid.

  1. Where to apply for a registration certificate?

The following authorities in Austria are locally competent and responsible for issuing the Anmeldebescheinigung:

  • The Governor of each Federal Province (Landeshauptmann)

The regional administrative authorities (Bezirksverwaltungsbehörde)

  • The district administration (Bezirkshauptmannschaft)
  • MA 35 in Vienna
