The Seegrotte in Austria

The Seegrotte is the largest underground lake in Europe, located in a former gypsum mine in small town called Hinterbruhl, close by Vienna.

The average deeper of the lake is 1,20 m and the water surface is 6200 m;.

The Seegrotte is a fantastic place to visit and explore from the historic roots to a boat ride.

At years 1848-1912 the gypsum was mined there. In 1912 the explosion was taken place and caused flooding the lower levels of mine with 20 million litres of water. In the results the mine was closed  until 1930 when discovered that the flooding created the largest subterranean lake. In 1932 the municipality decided to take advantage of the touristic potentiality of Seegrotte.

The Seegrotte turned out to be a touristic attraction and natural interesting included exploring one of the greatest underground touristic tunnel in Europe.

During World War II the Seegrotte was occupied by the German military forces who pumped out water from the cave and proceeded with their work. Their plan contained elements such as building up an underground aircraft factory inside which were jet fighters called the Heinkel He 162; as well as producing the parts of it. Moreover, they transformed the final shape of the lake, flattening the lakebed and layering loads of concrete mixture.

After the war the Seegrotte was flooded again and reopened for visitors to explore.

Furthermore, discover something to inspire you;

The interior of the former mine has inspired the film director of the Three Musketeers. We would also like to remind readers of the cast members of this film were Charile Scheen and Kiefer Sutherland playing one of the lead part.

To your amazement, there can still be found the anchored boat that belonged to Richelieu cardinal.

A great way to enjoy and admire the natural waterways of the lake, you can come and tour the old mine taking a boat ride across the underground lake.

The fabulously and amazing lighted tunnel seems to emphasise the strongest and magical effect by reflecting on the surface of the water.

Please get dressed the warm clothes during your visit the Seegrotte because there is a chill temperature inside, invariably 9 degrees Celsius.

The visit lasts appr. 45 min.
